Rob and Tom Play Golf with Vince Gill

Thursday, August 13, 2009

You never know whom you're going to run into on a golf course in Branson, Missouri.  Rob Evans, Dan Lucy and Tom Trtan run into country music legend Vince Gill who is in town to pay tribute to his friend Payne Stewart.

Rob Evans - We're at Payne Stewart Golf Club in Branson, Missouri, joined by multi-Grammy Award winner Vince Gill.
Vince, what brings you to town?

Vince - "The club's new, and this is kind of their grand opening, so we grabbed some guys, some pros, and came down. I'm going to perform a hillbilly concert tonight," Gill says

Rob - "I look forward to that. We're going to play a scramble, you and your celebrity friends versus Team KOLR/KSFX, Tom Trtan, Dan Lucy and I. You ready?"

Vince - "Bring it."

It was brought. Sort of. It was short.

"What's the dew point?" someone asked Trtan.  "It's high. In my shorts," Gill said.
Vince's joke was almost as funny as Tom Trtan's swing. Right by the ladies tee!

Dan Lucy's, the sports guy, went in the woods. Vince is close to a scratch golfer, though his tee shot headed for the trees. His partner, professional and CBS announcer Bobby Clampet, actually helped design the course, but two drives out of play later, it was hard to tell. The boys went looking for a ball to hit.

Our second shot was tough. Mr. Trtan's shot went 20 yards, or maybe 20 feet. Dan was sand-bound, and I almost took out the Director of Golf, TJ Baggett. Sorry about that. It was a bad lie. Vince miraculously 'found' his ball. My bunker shot from 100 yards out stuck just ten feet from the pin, but Bobby claimed I grounded my club. "Two shots, that's two shots, this isn't a hazard," he joked.

Dan Lucy's shot never even left the sand. "Throw it," the celebrities say, "we'll give you a throw."

Vince got caught throwing his ball, too. "It was better than the sports guy's," he was quick to point out.

Team Vince missed the birdie putt, and tapped in for par. Tom's putt missed by an inch, and it was up to me to tie. But before I could, Team Vince conceded the putt.
